ARGENTINA
FITZ ROY AND LOS GLACIARES NATIONAL PARK (Oct 2007) text
 Typical landscape of the
Argentinian Patagonia
 The Andes rise between
Argentina and Chile. The climate changes dramaticly
 One of the biggest
attractions of Patagonia is Perito Moreno glacier
This wall of ice is up to
70m high
 Large chunks of ice often
break off and fall into the lake
 New walkways provide a
great way to appreciate the size of this monster
Perito Moreno is one of 48
glaciers fed by the Southern Patagonian Ice Field
 Periodically the glacier
advances forming a natural dam. It separates the lake into two halves
 The water-level rises and
the pressure breaks through the ice. It
produces a spectacular rupture event
 Perito Moreno Glacier is
one of only three Patagonian glaciers that are growing
 It's 30km long and covers
250 square kilometers
