Most antarctic expeditions
start from Ushuaia in Tierra del Fuego (Argentina)
After 2 days at sea we
cross Drake's Passage and arrive in South Shetland Islands
Our first landing took
place in Barrientos Island
Colony of Gentoo penguins
and our ship (M/V Ushuaia) in the background
Gentoo penguins in
Barrientos Island
During our first landing
everybody was taking pictures like paparazzi
Gentoo penguin, the most
common one during this expedition to Antarctica

Barrientos Island
Chinstrap penguin, also
very common in South Shetland Islands
Chinstraps have a black
band under its head. It looks as if they were wearing a black helmet

Moving on to the next
destination - Hydrurga Rocks
Tourists are transported
to the shore by zodiacs
First icebergs
Our guide is preparing the
landing site. Safety was always very important for them
Another zodiac has arrived
Hydrurga Rocks. Still a
lot of snow in November
Raw beauty of Antarctica
Hydrurga Rocks
Chinstrap penguins feel at
home here despite our presence
Penguins and snowy
sheathbills
Snowy sheathbill - the
only land bird (excluding Penguins) native to Antarctica
Hydrurga Rocks. We had 2
hours to wander around
Watching penguins is one
of the best things to do in Antarctica
In November penguins build
nests and lay eggs
Males build nests with
stones and other material they can find
Chinstrap penguin
collecting stones for the nest
Hydrurga Rocks
During our landings, we
could walk around the sites freely (but respecting the rules)
Hydrurga Rocks
Hydrurga Rocks is located
on Two Hammock Island (Palmer Archipelago)
Our ship M/V Ushuaia had
88 passengers onboard
Bigger ships are more
comfortable, but tourists have less time during landings
Amazing icebergs on the
way back to the ship
Usually only one-tenth of
the volume of an iceberg is above water
One of the passengers was
painting instead of taking photos
