BOLIVIA. SALAR DE UYUNI, LAGUNA CELESTE AND TUPIZA (Sept - Nov 2004) text
Train cemetery near Uyuni
The bus I took from Uyuni
to Tahua
Village of Tahua lies at
the foot of volcano Tunupa
I tried to climb Tunupa
but I didn't get to the top
Salar de Uyuni and islands
surrounded by salt desert seen from Tunupa
The next day I set off
from Tahua to Isla de Pescado, some 30km away
Surface of Salar de Uyuni
in late afternoon
Getting close to Isla de
Pescado, where I wanted to camp for 2 nights
All day alone on Isla de
Pescado
I was running out of water
and had to walk at night to Isla Incahuasi
15km away
Isla Incahuasi. Even more
beautiful, but full of tourists
Another view of Salar de
Uyuni, the biggest in the world
I took a 4-day tour by
jeep all the way to volcano Licancabur
Lakes and flamingoes
There are 5 big lakes on
the way, each one of them is stunning
There is a lot of driving
and only short stops at the lakes
Rocks are formed by wind
Another factor is changing
temperature, from freezing at night to warm during the day
The most famous rock
called Arbol de Piedra. I shouldn't have climbed it, sorry
Amazing Laguna Colorada.
Red colour is caused by pigmentation of some algae
What looks like geysers is
actually borax picked up by dust devils
These are geysers called
Sol de Mañana
It's best to be there for
the sunrise, but prepare for freezing cold at 5,000m
Hot spring can save you
from the cold, but not everybody likes to get wet
When I was sitting in warm
water, the cook prepared breakfast. Great!
Continuing south towards
Chile. This is Atacama desert
Laguna Verde. I camped
here for 2 nights in order to climb Licancabur volcano
Laguna Verde seen from the
slopes of Licancabur
Near the top of Licancabur
5,920m
This is the only bus from
Uyuni to Quetena. Once a week, 12 hours journey
Quetena. I set off from
here to Laguna Celeste
It was a 2-day walk in
high-altitude terrain
The most difficult part
was finding water
I was also afraid of
getting lost because there are no maps
The first lake full of
flamingoes
Laguna Celeste, the lake I
wanted to see
Laguna Celeste is very
remote and rarely visited. I felt privileged
Strong wind causing
ripples on the surface
I travelled by this car
and it had flat tyre on the way
Fiesta in Tupiza
Admiring scenery around
Tupiza. Best done on horseback
One day excursion by horse
was enough for me
