On the way to Portal Point
- our first continental landing!
Portal Point turned out to
be the most beautiful landing of the whole expedition
Zodiacs transporting
remaining passengers to the shore
On the way to Portal Point
After disembarking, the
only way was up to the viewpoints
Playing with ice
Portal Point - no penguins
this time, just amazing scenery
As always, our ship was
waiting away from the shore
It's hard to believe that
Antarctica is the driest continent
Portal Point, Antarctic
Peninsula
Antarctica is also the
coldest and windiest continent
Antarctica is nearly twice
the size of Australia, but we visited only Antarctic Peninsula
Walking up the hill for
better views
Antarctica has no
permanent residents, but a few thousand people live at research
stations
Portal Point, Antarctic
Peninsula
98% of Antarctica is
covered by ice
Antarctic Peninsula is
claimed by 3 countries: Argentina, Chile and the UK
The whole expedition took
10 days (5 days in Antarctica)
Weddell seal, very common
in Antarctica (800,000 individuals)
Group of Gentoo penguins
Gentoo penguins, one of
three penguin species we have seen
We had to stay 5m from
penguins, but sometimes they came much closer themselves
Gentoo penguins are
curious of humans
Moments like this make
Antarctic expeditions unforgettable
This group stayed with us
for 10 minutes
Gentoo penguins can reach
90cm in hight
Gentoo penguins can dive
as deep as 200 meters!
On the way back to the
ship, we took a ride between amazing icebergs
Penguins resting on top of
the iceberg
This ice has broken off a
glacier or an ice shelf
Blue icebergs develop from
deep glaciers, where pressure eliminates air bubbles
As light travels through
the water, it absorbs waves of light from the red end of the spectrum
Because red is absorbed,
blue colors become more prominent
Another icebreg
The biggest icebergs in
the world are hundreds kilometers long
Usually only one-tenth of
the volume of an iceberg is above water
We are navigating amongst
large pieces of ice
Portal Point
Portal Point
Portal Point
Because water is so clear,
I could see how much ice was underwater
Icebergs come in all
shapes imaginable
Another iceberg
Ice labyrinth
The color of the iceberg
depends on light and type of ice (I used polarizing filter)
Every iceberg is different
Blue color means compact
ice without air bubbles
Zodiacs are loaded onto
the ship and we move on to our next destination
