China 2013
Sleeper bus from Kunming
to Liuku in Yunnan province
320km-long Nu Jiang
Valley. No white tourists here!
Famous bend of Nu Jiang
river just before Bingzhongluo
Arriving in Bingzhongluo.
I liked it from the moment I saw the clouds
Morning market in
Bingzhongluo
Day trip up the valley. We
went by car and returned on foot
Usually, women carry their
babies like this
We tried to say hello to
local kids, but she was not interested
Houses are simple, but
every one of them had a washing machine outside
This was a mill, powered
by water and clearly still in use
Nu Jiang river. Tibet is
really close from here, but foreigners are not allowed to enter this
way (army checkpoints)
Old and new
Path leading to one of the
villages was carved in the rocks
This path is the only way
people can get to the village
Butterflies about to be
born
Nu Jiang Valley was
supposed to be spectacular, but we were not impressed. Maybe because of
the rain...
The best thing about Nu
Jiang was the lack of tourists. It's not easy to escape the crowds in
China
Saying good bye to
Bingzhongluo
Nu Jiang valley
Gongshan. We were lucky to
meet Chinese tourists and travel with them
On the way to Fugong, an
abandoned town above Nu Jiang valley
The are many catholic
churches in Nu Jiang valley
Fugong was abandoned
because of unstable ground, but after 20 years people started to move
back in
He should be sent to
Shaolin for training :)
A waterfall on the way to
Drung Valley - one of the most remote places in China
We went by jeep,
traveling from the jungle up to high mountains. Most of it was a newly
paved road
After a tunnel we started
to descend to the Drung Valley. Only a 4x4 can do this part
The first village was not
as remote as we were hoping. The government is building many new houses
For some reason, snooker
tables were popular in both Nu Jiang and Drung valley
One motorcycle, 5 people
The government is bringing
civilization to this remote valley
This is how people still
live here, but the road is being paved and development is certain
No description needed here
We walked 15km of unpaved
road to the last village before Myanmar border
This river flows to
Myanmar. We followed it to the border
This is "us". Without our
Chinese friends who we met a week before, it would have been
impossible
to get this far
Road ends here. Villagers
come from Myanmar and carry groceries across the border
Porters take huge loads.
First obstacle - this bridge, which they cross with great skill
There is no hotel in the
village, but we were allowed to sleep in this house
By now I forgot all the
hotels we stayed in, but this place I still remember
Simple life
In Drung Valley there are
still women with tattoos on their faces. Only 5 are still alive
Next day we traveled back
to Nu Jiang Valley
People from Gongshan
Breakfast time! Let's try
this "restaurant"
They used plastic bags to
keep the plates clean. I guess that's better than disposable plates...
Many restaurants had
fridges, where customers can pick what they like and say how they want
it prepared
Our dinner is being
prepared
