NEPAL + INDIA 2011
NEPAL. EVEREST BASE CAMP TREK PART 3 (Gokyo Ri to Lukla)
3rd Lake seen from the
trail leading to Gokyo Ri
As we get higher the
valley below fills up with clouds. You can still see houses in Gokyo
Looking towards Mt.
Everest from Gokyo Ri 5360m
Looking north is the great
expanse of Ngozumpa Glacier
Ngozumpa Glacier, clouds
and Mt. Everest. It doesn't get much better that this!
Clouds keep coming up
A glory (optical
phenomenon), it can only be seen when the observer is directly between
the sun and cloud
My wife went back to Gokyo
and I decided to stay here until sunset
By this time it was very
cold and windy
When I saw this, I forgot
about the cold!
3 mountains over 8,000m
illuminated by setting sun: Everest, Lhotse and Makalu
After sunset the sky
changed color. Mt. Everest is about 20km away but looks much closer
Looking south towards
Namche Bazaar. Sitting here alone and watching the colors change was
the highlight of this trip
The Moon appeared next to
Everest and I just had to stay until complete darkness. Amazing!
Day 13 from Gokyo to
Sanasa. Looking towards Cho Oyu
Machhermo. Most hotels
were closed for winter (11 Dec)
Locals in Machhermo claim
that a yeti killed 3 yaks and attacked a woman here in 1974
Entrance to the village
Simple house in a small
Sherpa village
Village of Dole marks the
change in vegetation and we enter a forest
Spanish moss hanging from
tree branches
Trail near Mong La. It was
getting late and we arrived in Sanasa at night
A male Himalayan Monal.
This is the national bird of Nepal
Back in Namche Bazaar, but
this time only for lunch
Necessary supplies are
carried to Namche Bazaar mainly by porters, because there is no road
transport
When I tried to carry
something this big, I almost lost my balance
Kids during a "walking
stick fight" with my wife
Scenery at around 2800m.
It's warm and green again
Mani stones inscribed with
the six syllabled mantra
Is it obvious I was 14
days without a shower?
